Tips for Planning a Home Improvement Project
- Measure twice. Small measurement errors compound quickly over an entire room, so double-check length, width, and height before you calculate.
- Buy a little extra. Material batches (paint, tile, flooring) can vary slightly between production runs, so having a small buffer avoids mismatched colors or finishes later.
- Account for waste. Cuts, offcuts, and mistakes are normal. Many pros add 10% extra material to their estimate for anything that involves cutting.
- Keep your receipts. If you need to return unused material, most hardware stores accept unopened cans and unopened boxes within a return window.
