How Does This Calculator Work?
The calculator multiplies your room's length and width to get the area, adds your waste percentage, and divides by the coverage per box, rounding up to the nearest whole box.
Boxes = ROUNDUP( (Length × Width × (1 + Waste%)) ÷ Coverage per Box )
Worked Example: Flooring for a 14x11 Room
A living room is 14 feet by 11 feet, using flooring that covers 20 square feet per box, with a 10% waste allowance:
- Room area: 14 × 11 = 154 sq ft
- Add waste: 154 × 1.10 = 169.4 sq ft
- Divide by coverage: 169.4 ÷ 20 = 8.47 boxes
- Round up: Buy 9 boxes

Flooring Buying Tips
- Buy from the same dye lot when possible — color can vary noticeably between production runs of the same product.
- Let flooring acclimate to the room's temperature and humidity for 48–72 hours before installing, especially hardwood and laminate.
- Diagonal and herringbone layouts waste significantly more material than straight installs — use a 15–20% waste allowance.
